8-day Road Trip Itinerary for Andalusia

I love road trips. This way you get to see so many things in a short amount a time. Andalusia was high on my bucket list, so in September I flew to the south of Spain, rented a car and hit the road. This overview is compiled based on all the research I did beforehand. It will give you lots of information, tips, traveling distances and inspiration. The end result is an 8-day road trip itinerary. Handy in case you’re planning a road trip in Andalusia yourself.

I hope it helps you to make plans for your own trip!

Day 1 | Málaga – Antequera

Hotel: Coso Viejo, Antequera
Travel distance: 50 km
Description: After arrival by plane in Málaga, we pick up the car from the rental company and hit the road. The destination for tonight is a hotel in the picturesque historic center of the Antequera
Tips: Antequera is a nice old town in the hills with lots of history

Day 2 | Antequera – Ronda – Cádiz – Sevilla

Hotel: GIT Via Sevilla Mairena, Mairena del Aljarafe
Travel distance: 380 km
Description: Today will be a busy day with lots of travel and lots to do and see. We get up early and after a delicious breakfast, we continue the road trip. After a long day, we arrive at our hotel. This hotel is located in a suburb of Sevilla, which reduces parking costs. There is a direct metro line, conveniently located in front of the hotel that will take you to the heart of Sevilla.
Tips: Go to Cueva del Gato for a piece of paradise on earth | Avoid the highways, drive through the Andalusian hills with magnificent views | Replace Cádiz by Jerez de la  Frontera, or try to visit both cities depending on your time schedule.

Day 3 | Sevilla

Hotel: GIT Via Sevilla Mairena, Mairena del Aljarafe
Description: A whole day to explore Sevilla.
Tips: Visit the royal palace, the Real Alcázar de Sevilla | Stroll through the Parque de María Luisa | Visit the impressive Plaza de España

Day 4 | Sevilla – Córdoba – Marmolejo

Hotel: Gran Hotel Spa Marmolejo
Travel distance:
210 km
Description:
Today you’ll visit Sevilla’s little sister, Córdoba. The hotel for the evening is conveniently located between Córdoba and the destinations for the following day, to save traveling time and hotel costs. The village Marmolejo itself is not particularly interesting, but the hotel is ok.
Tips:
Visit the Mezquita and the Alcázar | Wander through the old Jewish neighborhood, la Juderia

Day 5 | Marmolejo – Baeza – Úbeda – Granada

Hotel: Hotel BS Príncipe Felipe, Albolote
Travel distance:
230 km
Description: The two historic towns Úbeda and Baeza together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and well worth a visit. The hotel for the night is located in a suburb of Granada
Tips:
Stroll through the old town centers | Especially in the morning these towns are rather quiet, a nice change compared to the busy streets of Sevilla and Córdoba

Day 6 | Granada

Hotel: Hotel BS Príncipe Felipe, Albolote
Description: It’s Alhambra time, one of the highlights of this trip!
Tips: Plan a full day to explore the Alhambra | Buy your tickets online and in advance. This will save you a lot of time waiting in the queue and risking the tickets to be sold out

Day 7 | Granada

Hotel: Hotel BS Príncipe Felipe, Albolote
Description: The second day in Granada is for the Sierra Nevada. A beautiful mountain range just outside of Granada. The overwhelming nature is a pleasant change of scenery compared to the last couple of days. We drive to the village of  Monachil, the start of the hike of Los Cahorros de Monachil. It’s an adventurous hike where you cross hanging bridges and hike along a river with challenging obstacles from time to time.
Tips: Bring plenty of water in the Sierra Nevada, it can be very hot.

Day 8 | Granada – Nerja – Málaga

Travel distance: 160 km
Description: Our flight is late in the evening, so today there is time for one last activity. Another adventurous hike, this time through a river. In fact, 10 km through a river. The hike starts outside the town of Nerja. The scenery along the way is simply stunning, and after 5km you will find beautiful natural swimming pools.
Tips: Bring old but sturdy shoe wear | When the weather is hot, this hike is very refreshing, because of the cold water and the shade in the canyon.
